What is an orange apple?

An orange apple is someone who is not afraid to be orange or purple, or blue or green in a wicker basket of red.

*But of course,
red is a color of the rainbow too!*

Conceptual Art... Is it art?

When people think of art mediums, usually things like bicycle wheels, hair dye, and toothpaste don't come to mind. These mediums are just some of the new ways artists have found to express them selves. The art that uses materials like this is called "conceptual" art. Part of it says that the art itself isn't as important as the idea behind the art.

On the television show "Egg" on PBS, conceptual art was explored in the episode entitled "What's the Big Idea?". The show featured several conceptual artists. One Brazilian artist named Vik Muniz hired a skywriter to draw clouds in the air:

Another artist dipped her hair into black hair dye and then swished it slowly across the floor of an art gallery. Another artist took tubes of toothpaste and covered a whole canvas with the toothpaste as his paint.

People question conceptual art often. At some museums there are whole canvases that are just blank, or just one solid color. These paintings, however, usually have very elaborate or "deep" titles. I've heard people around me say things like: "That's not art." "I could paint a canvas black, why am I not making thousands of dollars?". To me, the trick to conceptual art is to come up with the idea first, before someone else. Yes, you probably could paint a canvas black, but it's been done already, so you wont make much money off of it. Conceptual art is all about the ideas behind the art, and to appreciate the art, you have to know the concept behind it.

Violence in the Media and Its Effects on Children

Though it might be at least a little difficult for a child to get hold of a gun, it is certainly not difficult for a child to get violent ideas in their heads. Violence is all around us; in video games, music, movies, television and magazines.
A new study conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics and other medical groups show that there is “...hard evidence about the harmful effects of media violence... fear, and increased aggressive behavior.” (Michael Brody of the AACAP)
I feel that instead of growing and developing with the aid of a
teacher or parent, children are learning from video games and movies with violent content. Children who witness too much violence are permanently traumatizing themselves. By age 18, the average American child will have viewed about 200,000 acts of violence on television alone.
However, the media is only a small part of the reason why teens and children feel like they need to commit a violent act. Though the media desensitizes a child's young mind, there are millions of school children who realize the difference between what is real and what is fake Hollywood blood and special effects.
Parents should be active in their child's life and should realize
when they are feeling aggressive or when they need attention. They should put limits on what their child watches and “...even the most vigilant parents agree that it is up to them to try to monitor the inputs in their kids’ lives” (Fox News) Parents need to set their children on the right track and need to give their child a certain level of freedom also.
“Right now, the message we’re sending children in the media is that violence is OK...” (executive director, Daphne White) and it is up to the parent, the child and media corporations to make sure that this message changes.
